Document "Using the 3M 3.5" head cleaning diskette kit" "Recommended usage: After 40 hours of operation." [Note: Tab as described following, is a transparent plastic cover over the head access slot on the top side of the cleaning diskette. On single sided drives the top of the drive has a felt pad, NOT a read/write head. Do NOT allow contact between the rotating cleaning diskette and the felt-pad or the diskette will DAMAGE the felt pad. - Herb Johnson 2025] HOW TO USE: [page 1] The 3M 3.5" head cleaning diskette can be used on both single and dual headed drives. Once it is used for dual-headed drives it cannot be used on single headed drives or it WILL cause damage to the drive. CAUTION: the head cleaning fluid is flammable and irritating to the eyes. When not in use, keep the bottle(s) tightly closed and away from children. 1. Single-headed drives- tab remains in place. 2. Dual-headed drive. remove tab. 3. Dispense six (6) drops of cleaning solution onto the fabric exposed by the head access slot on metal hub side of the diskette. [Page 2] 4. Insert into drive as you would a normal diskette. 5. Engage head(s) for 30 seconds by: A. Typing "DIR" (and specifying drive to be cleaned). B. Repeating procedure two (2) more times. 6. Remove diskette. Check usage on label. When not in use, keep bottle(s) tightly closed 7. Place cleaning diskette and dispenser bottle in reusable plastic storage caddy. Keep handy in diskette storage file. SUGGESTIONS FOR USAGE: Because various computer models access their diskettes differently, specific methods must be used for each distinctive machine type to clean the heads properly. The goal is to cause the drive to try to read the head cleaning diskette for a total of 30 seconds. Since the head cleaning diskette has a different texture, it will cause a louder noise than a regular diskette and some kind of read error may be displayed on the screen. This does not mean that the diskette is harming your system. In fact, the cleaning fabric is less abrasive than industry specifications for actual magnetic recording media. [page 3] GENERAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Determine whether you have a single~ยท or dual-headed drive and prepare the cleaning diskette for use according to the type of drive you have as directed on page 1. 2. Boot up the system. 3. Insert the cleaning diskette in drive to be cleaned. 4. Direct your system to this drive. Below are prompts to keep the drive running for the needed 30 seconds for . some of the major computers: For Hewlett Packard follow steps 1-4 above, then: 5a. The computer will try to read the cleaning diskette. It will not find any applications and will display that message on the screen. Direct computer to "reread applications." 5b. Reread 2 more times. This will be sufficient time to clean the head. For IBM, Data General follow steps 1-4 above, then: 5a. Direct your system to do directory at prompt... A> DIR A: or A> DIR B: 5b. In answer to the message "abort, retry, or ignore?", type "R" for retry. Repeat procedure two (2) more times. For Apple Macintosh follow steps 1-4 above, then: 5a. You will get a message indicating the disk is unreadable and the system will ask you to "eject or initialize." 5b. Eject the cleaning diskette and reinsert it repeating the procedure two (2) more times.
