Herb's SGI and Sun equipment

This page Last updated May 15 2008

To email me or to order, see see my ordering Web page for my email addresses.

I mostly deal in Mac and old S-100 equipment (pointers later). But I also obtain other computers in the process. This section of my Web site lists Silicon Graphics (SGI) and Sun Microsystems, items of various sorts as follows below. I also have another page of DEC, Data General and other related items which were listed here until Aug 2005. Despite their age, there is still interest in these systems, particularly SGI systems for Europeans.

If you want a bit more background about the features and usefulness of SGI's Indy, Indigo, and Indigo 2 systems, check this document from a client of mine for his opinions.

Follow the pointers below to specific SGI models; also some Sun and DEC stuff and related items.

If you are interested in these systems, you might be interested in other older computers. Check my my S-100 Web page to see all my S-100 (Altair, IMSAI, etc.) docs. Also check my Intel Multibus, STDbus and VME docs and hardware pages.

Meanwhile, I have other activities on this Web site: Check my Home page for links to other sections on Astronomy and Optics; Apple Macinstosh stuff; S-100 computers and 8-inch floppy drives; SGI, Sun and DEC equipment; some "odds and ends" computer stuff; electronic and other test equipment; and personal information.

SGI systems

SGI Indy stations

[SGI Indy] Over the years, I've picked up these Indy stations and some IndyCam video cameras. Now in 2005, I'm only stocking the R5000 processor based systems, but I have parts for the R4000 and R4400's. Also, prices will go UP from now on, as fewer of these systems are available today.

Here is a typical view of the Indy interior. This processor appears to be an R4000 (Mips 3); the video card appears to be the NG1 XL-8. There are a number of Web sites that can provide more info on these stations, a Web search will find them. Shipping weight for one unit, 20 lbs; for two units, 40 lbs.

If you want more (or less) RAM on these let me know and I'll price accordingly. Software is not warrented to be complete or working, but we will describe the system's startup behavior and displayed OS version if any. WE HAVE NO PASSWORDS for any system software or password-protected hardware. (A physical jumper disables hardware passwords.) The numbers below such as "Indy #2" are merely identifiers for my stock, not SGI designations. We generally have more than one machine of a given configuration, prices below are examples for specific configurations.

Indy R5000 150Mhz SC system w/ 24-bit graphics. R5000 at 150MHz, 16K/16K/512KB cache, 24-bit Indy Graphics card, 64MB RAM. no floppy. displays startup and X window screens OK. Can test with an operating system but will not sell with an OS. NIDEC power supply. ask about price and availability.

Indy R5000 180Mhz SC system w/ 24-bit graphics. Otherwise same as above R5000/150 system, ask about price and availability only a few left.

Again, we can add more memory or drives if requested.

To email me or to order, see see my ordering Web page for my email addresses.

SGI Indy parts

We have a few other Indy parts as listed below, plus others not listed. As I'm in the USA, my European customers ask about parts as they are cheaper to ship than entire systems. So by request, here are some parts prices; if you want other parts, ask for prices and availability. But my "best" parts are listed here or in the system above. If you want those parts, make offers!

The Indy power supply may be either from NIDEC or Sony. The NIDEC brand supply has two power cables, the smaller connector of the two is one inch wide. The Sony supply has two cables, the smaller connector is 1-6/32nds inches wide. Either will fit the Indy motherboard with the corresponding 1-1/32nd inch power connector. If your Indy motherboard only has a one-inch power connector you will need the NIDEC supply.

Incidently, the CPU "modules" below include the CPU chip on its own circuit card, cache, etc. The "logic" card is the circuit board in the Indy which holds the PROM monitor chip and the connectors for the graphics card: we will match it the CPU module if you buy both. If you only want the PROM, it will cost the same as the PROM plus board (but shipping to Europe will be cheaper).

IndyCam digital video cameras

I have many IndyCam digital video cameras, model CMNB006E, part number 024-0825-001. These attach to the Digital Video Port of SGI Indy systems. They use an I2C bus for camera control, check the Web for more info. As they are relatively common, I'm offering them for $19 each plus shipping, AS-IS. I will look them over and not sell any unit that has obvious physical damage, but these are generally reliable models.

SGI Indigo stations

[SGI Indigo]

I have a few R4000 Indigos, tested Aug 2006 and working, from which I'm selling PARTS. (As of 2005 customers are not asking for complete systems.) I have several Indigo systems: R4000 @ 100MHz or @ 150MHz which all have GR2-XS24 or similar graphic card sets. I'll offer the CPU board, graphics boards or parts - NOT SYSTEMS due to age and costs and effort of shipping whole systems. CPU boards may need new battery, scour the Web for how to replace these and why. Because of the low price and low demand, we are offering these Indigo items AS IS, TESTED PREVIOUSLY but not tested again.

[SGI Indigo graphics] Here is a typical Indigo graphics card set I'm offering:
GR2 graphics card "motherboard" 030-8117-001
Z buffer ZB4 030-8060-001
three VM2 modules 030-8059-002
..and a daughter card, no obvious number. You'll get whatever number of GE "graphic engine" chips is on the card set sold.
For a brief discussion of Indigo graphics, check this document.

This card set as described above: $39, weight 8 lbs packed.
Indigo graphic (3) VM2-modules seperately 3 for $20. may reserve for sale w/graphic cards.
Indigo Z-buffer $20, may reserve for sale with graphic cards.
GR2 graphics motherboard $19, weight 5 pounds packed.
Indigo GE7 chip, check my Indigo 2 graphics section for these?

For the Indigo "drive sleds", I include the metal clips. Here is a description of them and their use. Hard drives have mounting holes on the bottom and and on the sides. The drives mount to the sled via the bottom holes. Put the clips on the drives' SIDES, at the holes on the frontmost two holes. The clips will flex a bit in doing so, and help hold the drive in place in the Indigo drive bay.

One system I picked up in 2005: an R3000 system as follows. Case is marked "sx 24" (painted not a tag). Processor card has four 4MB SIMMs and is reported as "33MHz IP12..instruction, data cache 32K". Has GR2-XZ graphics. One Seagate ST1480N drive, boots up IRIX 4.0.5 to password (no passwords). This is worth $75 just in parts alone: what do YOU offer?

Indigo parts, as available. All used and working.

These were tested in Aug 2006. We will not test again, sold AS-IS well packed.

To email me or to order, see see my ordering Web page for my email addresses.

SGI Indigo 2 stations

[SGI Indigo 2] As most people are buying parts rather than systems today, I'm mostly selling boards and power supplies. I have a very few complete systems. Shipping weight for each Indigo2: no drives 50 lbs, with 1 or 2 drives 55 lbs. CPU speeds are those as reported by onboard ROM monitor (hinv). "Teal" is the blue-green case color, "purple" is self-described.

Teal/Green Indigo 2 systems

As of 2007, we parted out the R4000 or R4400 "teal" systems, so only parts are available.

Purple Indigo 2 systems

We'll try to keep a few "purple" Indigo 2's intact, but parts from them will be available.

Indigo 2 (purple), R4400/250, High Impact/TRAM graphics (removed). 96MB RAM, CD-ROM drive Toshiba XM5401TA, hard drive Quantum XP34400 w/Irix 6.5. Also Archive Python DAT tape drive 01931. (tape and CD ROM not tested.) No graphics cards. Power supply is 060-8001-001 rev 01, backplane is 030-0680-002 rev A. Booted Aug 2007 with Irix 6.5, but boot delays while looking for other hosts in network. Shipping weight 55 lbs. Cards available seperately as listed below, or will sell system without video cards, ask for price.

Indigo 2 R10000 Solid Impact system purple case, R10K IMPACT labled. R10000 at 195MHz, w/ secondary cache. 64MB RAM. Solid Impact video, see list below. Quantum XP32150 2GB hard drive and Quantum XP 34550S drive with IRIX 6.5, booted Aug 2007 to login screen no passwords. $109 for system as described, plus shipping. shipping weight 50 lbs. Cards available seperately, or will sell system without video cards, ask for price.

Indigo 2 graphic & video cards & cables

Since 2005, most of my customers want graphic cards. We make simple tests, so graphics cards are sold as working under the ROM monitor when pulled.

SGI A/V cable or "dongle" or breakout box, 018-8204-004 rev A, sometimes called "junior", for ev1. These have the three-row 26 pin "analog breakout connector" at one end, and the other has a triangular plastic piece with SVideo and RCA jacks for video and audio. A link that tries to explain some of this http://www.lurkertech.com/lg/ev1s.html">ev1 stuff is here. Price *while we have them* is $49 each plus shipping. One left as of Dec 2006.

Indigo 2 parts

Prices do not include shipping. For some items, like a midplane or a motherboard, maybe you should buy a "stripped" system with no bus cards, power supply, drives, processor. It's up to you.

R8000 CPU card: Here's an unusual Indigo2 part: an R8000 processor, but with an odd SGI number. I found two CPU cards which I apparently salvaged from R8000 systems. The cards are marked 030-0759-001 and I marked them as from an R8000 75MHz system.Numerous sites show 030-0751-001 for the R8000/75 with 2MB SC. A Google search for 030-0759-001 shows NOTHING. 030-0759-004 is a part number for a RAM for SGI Origins.

My 0759 boards are dated 1994 looks like the board on this page other than the heatsinks on my board. The model number is apparently written OVER another model number, so it's possible these are some kind of revision. The clock chips on these boards are 50 and 75 MHz, each board. The systems they were pulled from, displayed R8000 at 75MHz. So these are not some odd speedup version.

Numbers on tags on these boards are as follows:

S09452; TW # 999; AVR 994 (yellow barcode) Chip datecodes 9438, 9439
S09451; AXL 431 (yellow barcode). Chip datecodes 9436

In any event, these are clearly R8000 CPU cards. They were working pulls in 2005. $50 each plus shipping - I can not find these available elsewhere and their part number is unique.

Here's some other Indigo 2 parts:

SGI O2 stations

Most of our O2's were bought a few years ago. As many have fragile cases we have a lot of "parts only" systems. Given the depressed prices for O2 systems and parts in 2007, and shipping issues, the ONLY REASONABLE way I can sell complete systems, is to PRICE THE CASES SEPERATELY. Otherwise, life is easier to just sell parts. But talk to us, tell us your location (city/state/ZIP or city/country)for shipping estimates, be specific in what you want, before making offers. PLEASE LOOK AT MY Parts and Upgrades section to see how to order parts, it's a little unusual. Detailed descriptions of parts in systems are in my "parts" section. NO WARRENTIES ON ANY SOFTWARE WHATSOEVER. Shipping weight per system is 25 lbs, shipped one per box.

Complete systems less cases

Shipping weight on complete systems is about 35 lbs. CASE IS PRICED SEPERATELY, we'll sell these without cases. See case part descriptions for case part prices. All parts are available seperately, as below.

O2 station, R10000 SC at 150MHz, NO CASE PARTS. Can test to login, no warrented software included. With audio card, four 32M memory modules, hard drive holder and 2GB hard drive. Two available as of June 2007, at $49 plus shipping.

O2 station R5000 SC 180MHz, NO CASE PARTS. Can test to login, no warrented software included. With audio card, four 32M memory modules, hard drive holder and 2GB hard drive. Four available as of June 2007, at $49 plus shipping. See case part descriptions for case issues.

To email me or to order, see see my ordering Web page for my email addresses.

O2 case parts

O2 cases We are reluctant to sell O2 cases and covers, because some O2's we recieve have VERY FRAGILE CASES; others are less fragile but still will break when stressed. Also, they are VERY HARD TO PACK AGAINST SHIPPING DAMAGE, especially when shipped as part of a system. Our best success is to pack the case seperately. Consequently, the price for an O2 case or shell, no CD-ROM or fan covers, WHEN SOLD WITH A "COMPLETE SYSTEM", is $39 plus shipping costs plus $10 for packing and handling. Sold seperately, it's $49 plus shipping plus $10. This covers our time, effort, packing materials and discussion of condition with customers.

CD-ROM front plates: Price for CD-ROM front cover/panel, if available, is $10 plus packing and shipping, or $5 when sold with O2 case. We prefer to sell cases with the cabinet or chassis, they ship better and it avoids disassembly. Ask about availability.

Fan cover is the blue cover in the back which mounts to the power supply fan. The snap which holds them in place often breaks off. I can provide a cover with a broken snap with systems sold; ask if I can provide a nonbroken cover for more money. Otherwise, I'll sell a fan cover with broken snap for $10 plus shipping.

O2 parts and upgrades

Here is how we describe these parts. The O2 consists of a number of plug-in "modules" or assemblies, which pll right out of the O2 without much fuss. One of these "modules" is the "processor" module, which contains the CPU chip and the board the processor plugs into which also has many I/O connectors and several memory slots. The PCI card slot is a seperate board, removed from the processor module. There is an audio "module" or an audio/video "module" which has the audio connectors or audio and video or Svideo connectors. There is a hard drive module or "sled". The Power supply is one pull-out cube. When you pull out all these things from the O2, and remove the outer fiberglass blue case and blue base, and the CD-ROM, you have a "chassis" which is mostly a metal box or frame with some kind of main board (circuit board) into which all these modules plug. OK?

O2 hard drive sled: $15 plus shipping, packed wt 1 lb. *OUT* June 2007
4GB IBM hard drive (SGI 013-1579-001): $15 plus shipping, weight 2 lbs packed.

SGI 320 stations

[SGI O2]

Silicon Graphics 320 stations These are single or dual Pentium III based systems with specialized (non standard) RAM and onboard "Cobalt" graphics; a PCI bus; Ethernet and USB; audio, S-video. Some questions about SGI support for on-board FireWire and USB, but use USB keyboard and mouse. YOu may need the SGI keyboard or a Microsoft "Natural" USB keyboard. The PCI slots use 3.3v cards as well as the 2.1 compliant legacy cards; one 32-bit, two 64-bit. (I don't warrent this information.)Here's a view inside.

If you do some Web searching, you'll find that some people have either upgraded these to dual P3's up to 1GHz; or simply used the case for generic and current motherboards. But even at 550Mhz they are still reasonable performers. SGI offers some support via their support and Legacy Intel Web sites.

We have dissassembled the 320 systems listed below. The parts are available as listed. Cases are in good shape, some scuffs but you can clean 'em and with a little wax remove them. No keyboards, mice or LCD displays available. We only have parts from the SGI 320's listed.

Other SGI

SGI Sirius video editing I have a SGI Sirius breakout box unit, CMN AS03, as photographed here. All I have is the box as displayed: no cables or software or interface cards. The back of the unit shows all the video and digital connections. Internally, there are no cards in the left-hand side of the case: apparently this is where the "serial option" board would be, it is not there. Look on the Web for more info: sources there say Sirius was supported on Onyx and Challenge machines. Again, this is ONLY the breakout box as described here. Price: $59 plus shipping, Shipping weight is 16 lbs packed.

Insite SCSI floptical drives

We have a few Insite floppy drives, I325VM, untested. These can either use 1.4M 3.5-inch floppy diskettes, or 20MB "floptical" MO diskettes. Frankly we have not had good luck on testing these, so I'm reluctant to offer them. Some are bundled with Indigo systems as above. Any recommendations on test, verify or repair of these under SGI ROM diagnostics would be appreciated. Absent further info or testing, we'd offer these AS IS pulled for $15 plus shipping.

SGI memory features and prices

Note: we do not warrent the information below to be complete or accurate. It is up to the buyer to determine fitness for THEIR use for any memory bought. There are other Web sites available with more and specific information; a Web search will find them. I'd appreciate any corrections.

for Indy, Indigo, and Indigo 2, memory MUST be added in groups of 4 SIMMs.

R4000 Indigo, Indy, Indigo 2: Industry Standard 72 pin pop-up, fast page-mode (FPM, a common variety; NOT EDO memory); "true parity"; 60-70ns. Also arranged by 36 bits (ex 4MB = 1Mb X 36). For Indigo 2 R10000: may require higher-speed memory to get full performance.

Many people specify "gold leads" or gold pins. This is apparently due to concerns about corrosion and good contact between the SIMM and its socket pins. Some say that clean contacts and occasional maintenance of tin-lead SIMMS will provide satisfactory service.

prices for good used tested 72-pin SIMMs, "gold" pins, parity, FPM; speeds as noted:

8MB SIMMS: $1 for 80ns; $1.50 for 60-70ns
16MB SIMMS: $3, 60-70ns
32MB SIMMS 60-70ns: "gold"-edged $15, tin/solder edged $12.
"gold" means it may be gold or may be phosphor-bronze, it's yellow ;)

O2 memory, Octane memory, SGI 320 memory are unique devices, so check my systems listings for memory types and prices.

Sun or SGI optical mousepad These are the metal "grid" patterns which are used by the optical mice. Ask about price and availability.

I have access to some of the older SparcStations: many SparcStation 4's, 5's, some SparcStation 10's, UltraSPARC 1 and 2's, and so on. If you have an interest, NAME A PRICE of some sort, and keep in mind the cost of shipping. Tell me your city/state/country so I can figure out shipping costs. OK?

One Sun I did obtain was an UltraSPARC 5 that boots up SunOS 5.8. From the bootup it seems to have 64MB RAM. Boot screen says "SunOS 5.8... UltraSPARC - IIi 270MHz UPA/DCI...OpenBoot 3.11..." and then it waits for a network connection. Hard drive size unknown until I figure out how to run in diagnostic mode. There is a floppy drive but no CD_ROM drive in the bay. Let me know what YOU would like to pay for this unit.

I picked up six or more 1000bT fiber optic network cards which apparently are Sbus or PCI compatible. These are from Packet Engines, from about 1998, are are either models GNIC or GNIC-I or GNIC-II. Some include manuals or an install CD. I will sell all of these at once for $15 plus shipping.

Some time in 2004 I picked up a Sun Multibus-based 150U system but I did not have time to look at it until Oct 2004. This is a 15 slot chassis in a black, rack-mount box. The front is only labled "Sun workstation" but the back is labled Sun model 150U. Subsequently, in Jan 2006 I've sold the system. The new owner said he'll set up a Web site for it soon. You can look at what I sold on this Web page.

I picked up some Sun Multibus cards. Condition unknown but physically OK, dates 1982-1984. Check this page for a description of those cards.

I picked up a Sun 3/E VME based system. Here is a photo of the chassis. Sun sold a VME card set for a 68020 based Unix/Sun system. Check this page for a description of the cards.

In Feb 2007 I disassembled a Sun SunPCi system, apparently the "PCi I" type. It has a "Penguin" PCI processor board with PC-100 RAM and a Socket 7 processor, and a "Panther" motherboard with its own processor and RAM. I have these two boards and nothing else. Make a modest offer.

Sun and SGI manuals, software

Prices do not include shipping and packing and handling. Ask for quote.

SGI CD, Irix 6.1 I have five original CD's from Silicon Graphics. All I know is what is printed on the CD, they are identical. The CD is printed "Irix 6.1, 812-0382-001, 7/95, Notes: Contains installation tools. Contains user-mountable filesystem". The CD sleeve has a lable "814-0382-001". $10 each plus shipping, five available.

Sun System and Network Manager's Guide, 800-4851-10, rev A 2 april 1990

Sun Desktop Sparc manuals, sealed. Looks like same set as above, but it's sealed so I can't verify. Sealed bag has lable, 825-1321-02 revision A. $25 plus shipping.

Sun "Doing more with SunOS: Beginner's Guide". 800-1710-10 rev a 9 may 1988. $10
Sun "System Introduction". 800-1702-10 rev a 9 may 1988. $10

monitors and cables

We aren't selling SGI or Sun monitors. They are just too big and old, and VGA monitors are plentiful. But we have some 13W3 monitor cables, and a few 13W3 to VGA adapters. "13W3" means there are 3 circular pins and 13 small pins in the connector. The cables usually measure a few to several feet long and have 13W3 connectors on them, males at each end. the 13W3 adapters are typically short cables or small adapter devices. Adapters have no electronics in them, they just reroute video lines, so it is UP TO YOUR MONITOR to be able to run correctly, not the adapter.

13W3 to VGA adapters: from $25 plus shipping. Tell me if it is for a VGA monitor to a Sun or SGI, etc. system; or a Sun/SGI monitor to a Pentium/Windows system. I can't tell you if it will work, only that it will connect the two items. I have a few of each.

13W3 video cables: $15 for short male to male, a few feet long. $20 for longer. shipping extra.

Additional information

Links to useful sites

This list is far from comprehensive. A Google search will find many good Web sites regarding the items listed on this page.

The Linux MIPS Web site has info on running Linux on SGI systems. Go there for details. It may be a little dated. There is a mailing list there. A voice says "plugh".

DBIT company supports PDP-11 emulation and also running PDP-11 cards from Intel/Pentium based computers. Check there for details.

A customer in 2005 suggested a discussion group Web site: "Have you tried Nekochan.net? It's an SGI enthusiast site. Lotsa people looking for sgi equipment. "

Here's some customer's references, unsolicited. Locations are either state in the US, or country outside the US. Note: my primary sales are in the Mac world, so I have many more references there. These are just SGI and DEC and Sun references. - Herb

Very happy with the order. Mozilla actually launches within seconds after clicking on the icon. Gimp is livable. Blender is really great at the rendering. S. M. of Australia said: "Great news Herb - my [SGI] O2 arrived today! I've no way of ever knowing where the holdup was, but I guess it's all academic now anyway. I'd given up on ever actually seeing it, but it's here happily accepting an installation of IRIX at the moment. You were right of course - it was superbly packed and arrived in perfect condition, I can't help but be impressed. Thanks very much again for the sale and thanks also for being so willing to help with advice and assistance when it looked like [its delivery was] going to go "pear shaped" (as the British say). Very best wishes to you and I'll be in touch again one day I'm sure."

I installed the [Indigo graphic] Elan last night, and got around 17k polygons/sec running full-screen Powerflip. S.M. of AUSTRALIA ordered a 24-bit graphics card for Indy. He said: "I've carefully plugged it in and since it requires a re-installation of IRIX for all of the 64-bit libraries (which I've not got time for today), I've run the PROM-based diagnostics and they all completed perfectly. That to me, seems to be about as much as one can ask for. I did boot the current installation and it's fully functional. Thanks very much indeed Herb, I'm very happy with everything....I was particularly impressed with the detail and precision of your payment and shipping procedures - just the sort of thing that inspires confidence, excellent!
