Herb's Compact Macs

The most recent revision date of this page is July 11 2008 To order or to send email @ me follow this link.

The Macs on this page are the first series of Macs produced by Apple. They are called "compact" Macs because they include a 9 inch monitor. Sometimes they are also called "9-inch" Macs. While they have been very common on the surplus scene all through the 1990's, they are getting hard to find these days, especially in unfaded original colors. Systems in much better cosmetic condition are described individually on my collectables Web page. Additionally, these often have faulty power supplies, dirty or gummed-up floppy drives, faded CRT's. All these need to be tested, repaired or replaced - that takes time and parts.

PRICES: Because of the above circumstances, we primarily sell PARTS for these systems. Since we can get more for them as tested parts than as complete (but faded) systems, we don't often offer these as systems. You are welcome to ask for a "complete" system, but it will likely be a working system with some fading, and cost "around" $100 based on parts value - more than that for 128K and 512K and 512KE systems. PLEASE please specify desired cosmetic condition (don't say "best") and whether you want keyboards and mice. Also, we INSIST you tell us your city/state/zip or city/country because shipping is costly.

Here are the various "compact" Macs I have available on this page:

Mac Plus, 512K, 128K

Mac Plus

[Mac Plus] The Mac Plus has up to 4 Megs of RAM, and an internal 800K floppy drive. Most are tan (beige), later models were "platinum" (off-white with grey keys). This one is pictured with an optional external 800K drive, the extended keyboard, and mouse. Some units with faded colors or uneven fading are offered at a discount. The 128K and 512K look very similar but have different connectors than the Plus for printer and modem; and there are variations in labling.

For questions about reading Mac Plus, 128K or 512K diskettes on an IBM-type PC, please review this document. Shipping weight for these systems is 20 lbs, 25 lbs with keyboard and mouse. See the parts sections for power supplies (analog cards) or floppy drives for these systems.

The Plus is generally is scarce in the surplus market in good or better cosmetic condition. As condition and availability set price, prices will continue to rise over time.

Mac Plus units in faded cosmetic condition but in good working order are available; ask about price. Units with better cosmetics cost more; and unfaded Platinum (grey) costs more than tan. See the linked information regarding likely prices.
Shipping weight for Mac Plus units is 20 lbs, 25 lbs with keyboard and mouse.

Mac Plus logic (cpu card), $25 plus shipping.

Mac Plus power supply, CRT and other parts are in our Mac parts page.

Mac 512K, 512KE

Mac 512K's or 512KE's hardly ever come up in surplus so it's hard to get more. I have a few, but cosmetics vary. See my section on Mac 128K, 512K and other collectables for any units available.

Mac 512K or 512KE logics, CPU cards, or motherboards are not available from me at this time. They require considerable testing and may require repair, due to age. Any 512K or 512KE motherboards I'd sell would be listed in my Mac collectables page. See the linked information regarding likely prices.

Mac 512k and 512Ke power supply, CRT and other parts are in our Mac parts page.

Note: The 512KE was sold with 800K drives, but the 512K and even 128K's were sometimes upgraded to use 512K motherboards and 800K drives. Here is a link to a photo of a 400K drive, the top cover plate is removed to show some of the internals. The 800K drive are half the height of this drive (2 inches, 5 centimeters) and look very different. You may be able to look inside the drive slot of a 512K and make a determination.

Mac 128K

All my 128K's for sale would be in what I call "collectable" condition; I don't sell working 128K's in lesser condition because their PARTS are worth more to me. Contact me directly for prices and availability; but first check my collectable condition section as whatever 128K's I'd have for sale would be listed there.

Mac 128K logics, CPU cards, or motherboards are not available from me at this time. They require considerable testing and may require repair, due to age. Any 128K motherboards I'd sell would be listed in my Mac collectables page. See the linked information regarding likely prices.

Mac 128K power supply, CRT and other parts are in our Mac parts page.

Mac Plus, 128K or 512K keyboards or mice

Mac Plus, 128K or 512K keyboards or mice are available as described on my Mac parts page for early keyboards and mice.

Mac SE FDHD or SuperDrive models

[Mac SE]

The SE series of Macs have up to 4MB of memory and a 9-inch diagonal black and white CRT. For years, these SE's were relatively common as surplus. Today they are getting hard to find, and many of them have cosmetic fading (they are turning yellow). And, at over 20 years, their original hard drives are just wearing out, the floppy drives are gummed up. So we will have to price these as systems based on work needed to restore to working condition. Systems in good or excellent cosmetic condition will be specifically listed below or in our collectables page. A minimum price for one of these systems, without keyboard and mouse, would be near $100 for one in a faded cabinet; more for SE/30 and SE FDHD. See the linked information regarding likely prices.

See the ADB accessories section for keyboard and mouse: For hard drives, review the section on other Mac hard drives for drive sizes and prices. For questions about reading Mac SE diskettes on an IBM-type PC, please review this document.

Mac SE, 4 Megs RAM, 1-800K floppy, no kbd\mouse: ask if available and state desired cosmetic condition. Check our SCSI hard drive section for prices.
Units in better cosmetic condition will cost more. Shipping weight 25 lbs, with keyboard & mouse 30 lbs.
SE logic only, $15 plus shipping, quantities available.

SE FDHD (superdrive), 4 Megs Ram, 1.4 floppy, no kbd\mouse: ask if available and state cosmetic condition. A minimum price for a working system would be above the price of an SE system for a system with poor cosmetic coloring but in good physical and working order.
Ceck our SCSI hard drive section for prices.
Shipping weight 25 lbs, with keyboard & mouse 30 lbs.
SE FDHD logic only - if available, $49 plus shipping.

NOTE: To upgrade an SE to an SE "superdrive" or "FDHD" to read 1.4M diskettes;
this requires three chips: two ROMS and one IWM (floppy controller).
OR, you could replace the SE logic (CPU) card with an SE FDHD logic.
You also need the 1.4M floppy drive of course.
For software, you may need the Apple File Exchange utility, or the extensions and software in some versions of System 7.
Check my parts section for prices on 1.4M floppy drives. In addition the SE internal frame may not have room to allow PDS expansion cards; the SE FDHD, SE Superdrive, and SE/30 often have room through the frame.

For SE add-on cards, check my Nubus (and earlier cards) section; for SE network cards, check my networking section.

Mac SE/30 models

[Mac SE/30]

The Mac SE/30 is a prized "compact Mac" system, as it will support a relatively large amount of memory with eight 30-pin SIMMS. There are also a number of expansion cards for the SE/30 for Ethernet networking and for external video monitors. Some people use them as printer servers, some just enjoy upgrading and modifing them, or using them as they are. We try to keep these in stock but like the other compact Macs they are harder to find.

As of Jan 2006 we are NOT SELLING SE/30's, until we can offer them with motherboard parts REPLACED. These systems are now so old that critical components, like specific capacitors and the high voltage transformer, are failing from AGE. Even a working system will fail over time. We will change this post when we have made repairs and determined a proper cost for REPAIRED SE/30's. See the linked information regarding likely prices.

Mac SE/30, 8 megs RAM, HD (see below), 1.4M floppy, no kbd or mouse. Clean and working, $ask for price and availability but specify cosmetic condition. Shipping weight 30 lbs, with keyboard & mouse 35 lbs. *NOT AVAILABLE, SEE ABOVE FOR DETAILS**

SE/30 logics (CPU cards) are generally not available seperately, we need them to sell with systems, so we'd price the logic too high. But for non-US customers, who pay a lot for shipping, we will price the logic only if you ask.**NOT AVAILABLE, SEE ABOVE FOR DETAILS**

The SE/30 systems use 8 30 pin SIMMs in groups of four. For increased memory, check the memory section.
For a larger hard drive, simply add the price of the drive from my internal hard drive list. Power supplies and CRT's are also available in my parts section. For SE/30 add-on cards, check my parts section. In particular we have SE/30 video cards in the video parts section

Mac Classic and Color Classic (and II) models

Classic and Classic II systems are available, some units have some color fading. Color Classics, with their color CRT's, are even harder to find. Be specific as to acceptable cosmetic condition when ordering if that is an issue. See the linked information regarding likely prices.

[Classic ii] Mac Classic, 1 megs RAM, 40M HD, 1.4M floppy. Shipping weight 20 lbs. Upgrade to 4 megs with an Apple 3MB add-on memory card, $10 with system.
Classic logic (CPU card) only, $39 plus shipping.

Mac Classic II (Performa 200), 4 megs RAM, 40M HD, 1.4M floppy. No kbd or mouse. System 7 installed. Shipping weight 20 lbs.

Classic II logic (CPU card) only, $49 plus shipping.

Color Classic system has a 68030 processor at 16MHz. shipping weight 30 lbs. Check my Mac collectables page for Color Classics and Color Classic II's.

Parts, memory for all the above systems are available - check the parts section.
